Iconic 80s singer Boy George joined Ken Bruce on our sister station Greatest Hits Radio to talk about I’m A Celeb and to give our very own Sam Thompson some advice on what to expect in the famous jungle.
On Sunday night (19th November) we got to see Free Radio’s Sam Thompson join nine other celebrities as they entered the camp for the very first time. However, it wasn’t before they all had their own task to complete, with Sam being suspended 100 metres up in the air off the side of a skyscraper in the Australian city of Gold Coast.
Ahead of him entering the jungle, Boy George popped in to give Sam a pep talk, telling him: “You go in there thinking I can handle anything, but it takes you really out of every comfort zone. I mean food, I think, is one thing that really agitates everyone. I think, breathe, stay calm, get involved. Get involved with everything. The tasks are the fun bit, because all the sitting around in the camp is very boring.”
He continued: “So when you go out to a task, it’s actually kind of invigorating. I actually really enjoyed the tasks, I was like, well, now we’re doing something because my boredom threshold is low, so get involved, don’t argue with people, don’t say too much…
Boy George finished: “Don’t do all the things I did, ignore what I did.”
However, chatting to Owen Warner who is filling in for Sam, Sam said: “I feel like, weirdly, the food thing, I don’t think of – this is famous last words – but I don’t think the food things’ too bad, because I’m relatively skinny as is. I’ve never been hangry before!”
Before heading into the jungle, we just had to give Sam an initiation of his own, just think of it as preparation for the new adventure down under…
After weeks of rumours, Sam was officially confirmed as a contestant on the 2023 series on Monday 13th November!
Taking to social media after the news was made public, Sam said: ‘✨The rumours were true ✨ I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be joining the adventure of a lifetime on #ImACeleb 🐍🕷️Tune into @itv every night from Sunday 19th November to see how I get on… wish me luck! 😱’.
After Sam supported his girlfriend Zara throughout her time on Strictly Come Dancing, the former Love Island star is now repaying the favour!
When Sam headed over to Australia ahead of the start date, Zara shared this cute photo of the pair, writing: ‘HES GONE DOWN UNDER !!! 🦘🇦🇺🌏 the rumours were true, I am so proud of you and so excited for you and for this adventure. I cannot wait to watch you every single night and be supporting you every step of the way. ❤️ p.s. can we all please vote for Sam to do one of the eating challenges?? I think it would make great entertainment considering how squeamish he is 😂😅’. (sic)
The minute Sam landed in Australia, he immediately kept up his reputation of being the best hugger of all time! Joining former EastEnders star Danielle Harold, First Dates’ Fred Siriex and food critic Grace Dent, Sam went straight in for the hug – and it was definitely what they all needed before taking on their challenge…
Along with Grace, Danielle and Fred, Sam was whizzed round on an incredible helicopter ride… Before being plopped on top of a 32-storey building on Australia’s Gold Coast. They were then instructed to climb down to a terrifyingly small platform, shimmy themselves down a pole and undo carabiners while pushing a star to the end of the pole – all in under three minutes! Thankfully, they were gracefully lifted to safety and not forced to jump off the end.
You can normally listen to Sam Thompson on Hits UK on Free Radio. Every Monday to Thursday from 7pm, Sam catches up with some of the biggest names around. While he’s in the jungle Owen Warner will be looking after Sam’s show.
